John Banks, Traffic & School Safety Officer

Officer John BanksMeet Officer John Banks. After John Banks retired in 2010 after 31 years of service with the Sacramento Police Department, vehicle versus pedestrian accidents in District One significantly increased. The lack of enforcement, in addition to the discontinuance of busing to local schools resulted in an influx of kids, bikes, and cars during drop off and dismissal times. In response, Councilmember Ashby was able to re-hire Officer Banks as a reserve officer to serve the District One community as an expert in traffic enforcement and safety around schools. Notably, John has been the recipient of two Bronze Medals of Valor and is also the only officer Citywide to be certified as a car seat safety specialist. His traffic enforcement experience and knowledge of car seat safety is a tremendous asset to our schools and families.

Throughout the school year, Officer Banks works with school principals, administration, City staff and the North Natomas Transportation Management Agency (NNTMA) to create and implement effective solutions in keeping our kids and families safe, such as policing traffic flow around school, conducting traffic and bicycle safety trainings for children, and participating in walking school bus programs. Officer Banks also uses a bicycle to teach kids about bike safety and maintenance and even rides alongside local youth during school events such as “Walking Wednesday” and “Footloose Friday” and often hands out helmets to kids who need them.
