FOX40: Natomas Park and Rec Program Saved from the Ax

I’m excited to announce that Natomas kids will be able to participate in the Parks & Recreation Summer Oasis Program which was slated to be cut due to our city’s fiscal crisis. Using a special fund specific for our community, I reallocated $10,000 so that this eight-week program will keep our kids out in the parks and enjoying the Sacramento summer.

Some good news for parents in Natomas as the Sacramento City Council mulls over a $4.4 million cut in the Park and Recreation Department budget. The Oasis summer youth program will be saved from the budget ax, thanks to city council member Angelique Ashby’s decision to shift funds to the program. . .

City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby got an earful from Natomas parents, and shifted money from funds collected from billboards and cell towers that can only be spent in her district.

“There aren’t a lot of things I can save because they cost too much. This program cost $10,000 to save, and I felt I could fundraise that and get community support for that,” said Ashby. . .

“I just can’t turn my back on an activity that gives our kids something safe and healthy to do in the summertime,” said Ashby.

In this difficult economy and with such a massive reduction in revenue to our city from property and sales tax receipts, I am committed to looking for creative solutions and seeking partnerships to provide positive and constructive supervised activities for our youth, especially in the summer months.
