Mayor Pro Tem Ashby secures California Northstate University Medical Center in former Sleep Train Arena site
Sacramento, Calif. (June 16, 2021) – Mayor Pro Tem Ashby and the Sacramento Kings today announced that the former Sleep Train Arena will become the new home of California Northstate University. After several community conversations regarding the arena-reuse, bringing a hospital to the site was the number one ask from Natomas residents. It is identified as the best and highest use of the site.
According to an economic analysis from Varshney & Associates, The California Northstate University Medical Center project is expected to generate $4.04 billion in regional economic output in the next 10 years. It will bring thousands of high wage jobs to the region.

I am thankful for the Sacramento Kings for their partnership and commitment to attracting a generational economic engine and high priority tenant for the redevelopment of Sleep Train arena, said Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby. “This is an amazing opportunity for the city and an important component to the overall health and well-being of our entire region.”
Approximately 35 acres of land will be dedicated to the first phase which will include a new medical center and teaching hospital. A nursing program, dental program and a pharmaceutical program will follow suit in the years to come.
